Fifteen minute warm-ups...

Right click to download 17MB video (.mp4) file to your computer...

Been away awhile working and attending to my kids holiday festivities. For the last month I've been trying to do fifteen minute warm-up drawings every morning to jumpstart my days...here's a quick christmas gift, here's a video of me drawing a Storm sketch done all on my computer. This is about a fifteen minute sketch. It's all about doing a completed figure drawing within the time period, very little thinking and no planning. Just gung ho full speed ahead...this is definitely a thing everyone should do as much as possible. I also have a small series of sketches where I try to do an actual scene. I'll try to flash them together over the weekend for viewing...

I was hoping to be able to post what my new project will be after Superman/Batman but still have a few details to work out...will at least post a Superman/Batman image by next week...

hey Whilce,

Thanks a lot for sharing with us these sketch-tutorials. I've always loved watching other artists draw and see how they approach the different stages of a drawing.

I've been wanting to get a tablet PC myself and have read a lot about the different models that are on the market. I was wondering if you had gotten the pen pressure to work with photoshop on your Gateway and if it handles nicely like a regular tablet.

Anyways, thanks again and keep up the good work!!! Take care

I gotta start doing that...
i usedta sit with my vcr and pause (yeah yeah, i just dated myself, but wait...) MTV's the GRIND (BOOM dated again) and draw the poses on the screen. the best part of this is that recently i started watching (i have an 11 month old daughter so i wake up at 5-6 am dialy) "SO-o-o-oul train", and TiVo pausing it and doodling them... it's a LAUGH RIOT!!! you draw super heroes? THERE ARE MORE CAPES on that show than any other on TV!.... and the afro's...(i usetda have one, i can mock them) you might want to give that one a try... it's dynamic and kinetic (i'm also an animator) and it's just AWESOME character design... we met at SDCC and i'd love to take you out for lunch if you ever have the time!

Hi Whilce, Ive been a fan of your work for a long time and would like to ask a serious question about your approuch to the medium. If you can answer it indepthly or short and sweet , its all good and very appreciated. So here we go:
How has your approach different from some of the major titles you have put out? ie., Coming off of X-factor going onto Wetworks there appeared to be a very similar look in mood to the character design. Then you jumped to Stormwatch:TA which dramatically looked more clean and lighting was quite differnt. Then theres Batman: Confidential which took a simplistic almost quick and unpolished look. Then the new book Wetworks Worldstorm looking like its going back to the roots of how Wetworks looked in the 90s but significantly looks more detailed and leaning towards a more fleshier defined look on all characters giving them a sense of personality rather than the stonecold look of the 90s.
Could my observations be correct and could you maybe shine some like as to your direction on your projects?
Thanks alot for your years of terrific art and dedication!
Will
